A Seattle Post Intelligencer May 20 Letter to the Editors headlined Clifford J. Hutchins's letter with this caption:

U.S. SUPPORTED, ENCOURAGED, IRAQ'S WAR AGAINST IRAN

Hutchins's letter declared:

"Americans firms, with the blessing of the United States government, supplied Iraq with components for the development and manufacture of chemical and biological weapons, which were used to rain down death and destruction upon the Iranians.
